Paving work to close Haystack Reservoir fishing pier

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation said Friday it will temporarily close the North Shore Fishing Pier recreation area at Haystack Reservoir from Sept. 9-30 to perform road and parking lot paving improvements.

The North Shore Fishing Pier recreation area is a free day-use area with an accessible fishing pier, parking and access to the reservoir, located about 10 miles south of Madras.

“Our facilities provide many wonderful recreational opportunities for the public to enjoy the outdoors with both land and water activities,” said Gregg Garnett, Reclamation’s Bend Field Office manager. “We routinely monitor and maintain these recreational sites to help keep the public safe.”

The public will continue to have options for camping and lake access during the temporary closure. The West Shore recreation area and South Shore Group Campground will remain open for the 2019 season offering camping, boating, picnicking and parking.

Haystack Reservoir borders Crook, Deschutes, and Jefferson counties and is impounded by Haystack Dam, which was built in 1957. It is owned by Reclamation and operated by the North Unit Irrigation District that supplies irrigation water to the area.
