Russia-Ukraine war: Key things to know about the conflict

Ukraine’s southern port city of Mariupol was again the site of intense combat as Russian forces bombarded the city, damaging a major steel plant. One local police officer says the city has been “wiped off the face of the earth.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said early Sunday that what Russian forces did in Mariupol “is a terror” that will be remembered for centuries. More than 4,000 people were able to flee the city Saturday. Zelenskyy said talks with Russia are ongoing, and Ukraine wants peace. The two countries have held several rounds of negotiations but remain divided on key issues.
