SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California now has some of the strictest laws on election deepfakes. The state could be among the first to test out the new regulations ahead of the 2024 election. However, two of three laws signed Tuesday are being challenged in court through a complaint filed in Sacramento Tuesday. Those include one that takes effect immediately to allow any individual to sue for damages over election deepfakes, while the other requires large online platforms, like X, to remove the deceptive material starting next year. The complaint claims the new laws censor free speech and allow anyone to take legal action against content they dislike.
