Trump says US should stay out of fighting in Syria as opposition forces gain

WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump says the U.S. should avoid engaging militarily in Syria, where an opposition offensive is threatening the rule of the country’s Russian- and Iran-allied leader. Trump’s first extensive comments on the dramatic rebel push came Saturday via his social media website. National security adviser Jake Sullivan separately said the Biden administration had no intention of intervening militarily but would keep acting as necessary to keep the Islamic State group from exploiting openings presented by the fighting. Trump condemned the overall U.S. handling of what is a 13-year war in Syria. But he added, “THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT PLAY OUT. DO NOT GET INVOLVED!”
