Barney Lerten celebrates 20 years of impactful journalism at KTVZ

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Barney Lerten is marking an incredible 20 years of service at KTVZ-TV, becoming a cornerstone of the station’s commitment to covering the most important stories for Central Oregon’s viewers. With more than three decades of journalism experience, Barney’s dedication to bringing the region the latest news and in-depth reporting has made him a familiar and respected figure in the community.
Before his tenure at KTVZ, Barney spent years honing his craft as a journalist with UPI and The Bulletin, followed by a five-year stint contributing to Bend.com and The Bugle. However, it was in early 2005 that he joined KTVZ, where he quickly became an integral part of the team.
Reflecting on his two decades of service, Barney shared, "It's been a privilege, an honor and quite a 20-year ride at KTVZ, and I'm glad to still be kicking out the news in more ways than ever. I've worked with and work with great people with memories to treasure. I hope to still 'ride the news tide' for at least a few years — after all, KTVZ turns 50 in just a couple of years!"
Barney’s impact on KTVZ extends beyond traditional broadcast journalism. As the digital landscape evolved, Barney has played a pivotal role in enhancing the station’s online presence, contributing significantly to the success of KTVZ’s digital platforms.
"Barney is an invaluable asset to KTVZ and the Central Oregon community. His extensive experience, strong work ethic, and ability to connect with viewers make him an exceptional journalist. He’s a cornerstone of our newsroom, and we’re grateful to have him as part of our team," said Gregory Deffenbaugh, News Director at KTVZ.
Barney’s two decades at KTVZ are not just a milestone, but a celebration of the passion and purpose that drives great journalism — a commitment to telling the truth, serving the community, and making an impact that lasts.
