Oregon braces for Christmas Eve windstorm, travelers urged to plan ahead
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is urging travelers to plan carefully around a strong windstorm expected to impact the state on Christmas Eve, coinciding with peak holiday travel periods.
Current forecasts predict strong winds from mid-morning through midday on December 24, when many people may be traveling to holiday gatherings or destinations. The high winds are likely to cause downed trees, power outages and debris on roadways across the coast, Willamette Valley and Cascade areas.
Wet and saturated soils from recent storms increase the likelihood of falling trees and debris slides. ODOT advises travelers to secure holiday decorations to prevent them from becoming road hazards in strong winds.
Additionally, winter weather will affect mountain passes in central and eastern Oregon, with snow and slick conditions expected to continue through the holiday weekend. Travelers crossing mountain passes should be prepared for winter driving conditions regardless of the weather at lower elevations. ODOT maintenance crews are preparing for the windstorm while recovering from previous storms.
For safety reasons, crews cannot begin clearing fallen trees or debris while high winds are ongoing; cleanup and response will start once conditions improve.
Travelers are reminded to avoid travel during peak wind hours if possible, particularly from mid-morning through mid-day on Christmas Eve. If travel is necessary during these times, caution is advised and drivers should maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel as strong winds can affect vehicle control.
Expect rapidly changing conditions and possible delays statewide and watch for debris, fallen trees and downed power lines. It is critical to never drive, walk, or ride near downed lines. Pedestrians and cyclists should avoid traveling during high winds and stay clear of trees and power lines.
ODOT urges everyone to plan ahead, adjust travel timing when possible and prioritize safety. Before heading out, travelers should check TripCheck.com for real-time road conditions, cameras, impacts and closures.
