Heating-Related Fires Surge in Oregon, Fire Marshal Emphasizes Winter Safety

KTVZ-TV

SALEM, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The Oregon State Fire Marshal is urging residents to prioritize fire safety during the winter, having investigated 10 home fires since Jan. 1 across the state. Recent incidents include a fatal fire in Portland, allegedly caused by an extension cord on a space heater, leading to increased calls for caution as heating-related fires become more common.

Amid below-freezing temperatures, the Oregon State Fire Marshal reported that two home fires occurred in Baker City related to fireplaces and chimneys. Tragically, a 64-year-old woman died in a Portland house fire on Jan. 9, believed to be linked to the misuse of an extension cord with a space heater. "These fires come as a tragic reminder of the importance of home heating fire safety, the second leading cause of home fires every year in Oregon," said Mariana Ruiz-Temple, State Fire Marshal.

In Oregon, fire safety is paramount during the winter months, especially as nearly half of all heating equipment fires (46%) occur from December through February, according to the National Fire Protection Association. In the first two weeks of January 2026, the state reported three fire-related deaths, underscoring the urgency of promoting safe heating practices.

The Oregon State Fire Marshal recommends several safety tips to prevent heating-related fires: keep flammable materials at least three feet away from heating equipment, plug space and portable heaters directly into wall outlets without using extension cords and have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected annually by a qualified professional. Additionally, space heaters should not obstruct foot traffic and must be turned off when leaving a room or going to bed. Regular testing of smoke alarms, at least once a month, is also essential to ensure they function properly.

Fire departments throughout the state are responding to numerous heating-related incidents as residents turn to various methods to stay warm. These statistics and ongoing incidents highlight the importance of proactive fire safety measures, particularly given the known risks associated with winter heating practices. For further recommendations and information, residents can visit the Oregon State Fire Marshal's website.

In light of these recent fires and the ongoing winter season, the Oregon State Fire Marshal encourages all residents to adhere to fire safety guidelines to protect themselves and their homes. Regular maintenance of heating equipment and vigilant adherence to safety practices can significantly reduce the risk of fire incidents throughout the season.
