Earlier Story -- BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A cyclist was seriously injured in a crash involving a vehicle at the intersection of Powers Road and Business 97 in Southeast Bend on Wednesday. The driver, identified as 31-year-old Samantha Schoene, was cited for careless driving causing the accident.
The incident occurred when Schoene, driving a white Subaru Forester southbound on South Business 97, ran a red light at Powers Road and struck the cyclist, a 34-year-old Bend resident, who was in the crosswalk. Officers and bystanders provided life-saving care at the scene before the cyclist was transported by Bend Fire medics to St. Charles Bend.
Following the crash, members of the Bend Police crash reconstruction team were called to investigate the incident. The investigation revealed that Schoene had remained at the scene and fully cooperated with police officers.
Bend PD officer, Cindy Ksenzulak, told KTVZ, 3rd Street and Powers Road is one of the busiest intersections with vehicle traffic and pedestrian traffic. "It has the three lanes in both directions, with that center turn lane. It is one of the highest accident intersections. We do use data to determine that. So it is on the list of having red light cameras in the future. "
She added, a red light camera would help them catch people trying to run yellow lights as well.
