Madras structure fire claims dog life, sends 4 to hospital

MADRAS, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A dog died and four people were hospitalized following a structure fire in northwest Madras on Wednesday evening. The blaze occurred March 11 at a residence on Northeast 10th Street.

Jefferson County Fire and EMS responded to the call at 5:48 p.m. and arrived to find heavy smoke and flames pouring from the building. The Madras Police Department and the Jefferson County Sheriff Office assisted at the scene.

Three individuals were transported to St. Charles Madras by ambulance to be treated for smoke inhalation. According to incident reports, a fourth person traveled to the hospital in a personal vehicle.

The emergency response involved 13 personnel, including 10 staff members and three volunteers. Equipment deployed to the scene included two engines, one truck, one tender, one rescue unit and two medics.

Captain Tom Jaca, who prepared the incident report, confirmed that one dog died in the blaze. The structure is located at 432 NE 10th St. near the local Safeway.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Jefferson County Fire and EMS Chief Kasey Skaar is the designated contact for information regarding the ongoing inquiry.

The fire department will provide updates as more information is learned about the cause of the fire.
