DESCHUTES COUNTY, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Emergency responders assisted a 67-year-old California man following a medical emergency at Smith Rock State Park on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred on the Misery Ridge Trail shortly after 12:00 p.m. on March 19.

The response involved personnel from the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, Search & Rescue volunteers, Redmond Fire & Rescue and State Park Rangers. The man was visiting family in the area when the medical issue began during his hike.

Redmond Fire personnel provided medical care to the man at the scene of the emergency. Deschutes County Search & Rescue volunteers then used a wheeled litter to transport the patient down the Misery Ridge Trail.

Upon reaching the base of the trail, the man was moved to a waiting ground ambulance. He was then transported for further medical evaluation.

The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office credited the successful response to the coordination between local fire services, park officials and volunteer programs. The agency noted that these resources are maintained to assist community members and visitors during emergencies in regional outdoor recreation areas.
