Highway 97 reopens near Chemult after natural gas prompts closure; ODOT advised drivers to ‘expect extended delays’

(Update: Highway 97 reopens after closure)

CHEMULT, Ore. (KTVZ) – A natural gas leak prompted closure of U.S. Highway 97 near Chemult Friday afternoon and evening, and ODOT advised motorists to expect extended delays.

The closure was reported around 3:30 p.m. and ODOT said “the gas company is en route for repairs.”

Region 4 spokeswoman Kacey Davey added, “There is no local detour rote for this closure."

The highway reopened Friday night.
