SISTERS, Ore. (KTVZ) – A La Pine man was cited on careless driving and other charges after his van struck and seriously injured a woman in a Sisters intersection Monday evening while her husband was carrying an orange pedestrian safety flag, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies were dispatched around 6:25 p.m. to the intersection of East Cascade Avenue and North Spruce Street in Sisters for a crash involving a pedestrian, Lieutenant Chad Davis said.

They said the 56-year-old La Pine man was driving a westbound 2015 Dodge Ram van when he failed to yield to a 72-year-old Beaverton woman who was crossing Cascade Avenue with her husband. He was carrying the pedestrian safety flag, placed at busy intersections to help pedestrians cross Cascade Avenue safely.

Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District medics responded to the scene and called an air ambulance to Sisters Airport. The woman was flown to St. Charles Bend, Davis said.

The driver was cited later for failing to stop or remain stopped for a pedestrian, careless driving and driving uninsured, Davis said. NewsChannel 21 does not name arrested individuals until and unless formal charges are filed.

The crash closed Cascade Avenue for about 20 minutes. The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Black Butte Ranch Police Department.
