(Update: Adding video, comments from witness)
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) – A cyclist was seriously injured in northwest Bend Friday morning when struck by a driver making a left turn off Skyliners Road onto Lemhi Pass Drive, police said.
Officers were dispatched around 7:47 a.m. to the reported serious-injury crash, Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller said.
Police learned the driver of a blue Subaru Legacy was heading east on Skyliners Road and attempted a left turn onto Lemhi Pass Drive, colliding with a cyclist traveling westbound on Skyliners Road.
The cyclist suffered serious injuries and was transported to St. Charles Bend. The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with officers, Miller said.
The Bend Police crash reconstruction team was on scene investigating the incident. As a result, Miller said, Skyliners Road remained closed for a time between Mt. Washington Drive and NW 17th Street. Also, Lemhi Pass Drive is closed at the intersection of Skyliners Road.
While not speaking to the specifics of the accident, Miller said, "It's just really important to keep an eye out for all those people. Don't be distracted. Pay attention and look where you're going - and that goes for cyclists and pedestrians as well."
A nearby resident who witnessed the crash aftermath said, "This is a really dangerous situation. I've seen a number of almost accidents here. And then on my walk this morning, sure enough, there's an accident."
