REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) – A 16-year-old Bend Senior High School student was killed in a two-vehicle crash south of Redmond Thursday evening, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

The crash was reported around 5 p.m. near the intersection of SW Canal Boulevard and Quarry Avenue, Sergeant Jason Wall said.

Witnesses said the teen was driving a Subaru Legacy heading north on Canal Boulevard when he “suddenly crossed the center line into the oncoming lane and collided head-on” with a Toyota Tacoma pickup driven by a 56-year-old Salem man, Wall said in a news release.

The Subaru driver was seriously injured and taken to St. Charles Bend. The Toyota driver was uninjured and his passenger, a 31-year-old Salem man, sustained minor injuries and was taken to St. Charles Redmond for treatment.

Investigators learned later in the evening, (the 16-year-old) had succumbed to the injuries he sustained as a result of the crash and passed away," Wall said. "The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office extends it heartfelt condolences to the family."

KTVZ News is not naming the student at this time, out of respect for the family’s privacy.

Wall said an investigation determined the Subaru driver was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

Bend-La Pine Schools’ crisis response team was at the school Friday “to provide counseling services to students and staff,” Communications Director Scott Maben told KTVZ News.
