CHILOQUIN, Ore. (KTVZ) – Two people were killed and two others seriously injured Sunday evening in a crash on U.S. Highway 97 near Chiloquin, Oregon State Police said Wednesday.
Troopers said a preliminary investigation indicated Wyonna Elaine Weiser, 38, of Chiloquin, was driving a Ford Expedition heading south on the highway near milepost 249 in Klamath County around 6:30 p.m. when the SUV slid sideways into the northbound lane, colliding with a Ford F-350 towing a trailer and driven by Franklin Maricle, 31, of Bend.
The pickup struck the SUV on the side and ended up in the northbound ditch, while the F-350 came to rest blocking most of the highway, OSP said.
Two passengers in the Expedition, Winnie Mae Hescock, 41, of Klamath Falls, and Laurece Lee Foster, 41, of Chiloquin, died at the crash scene, troopers said.
Weiser was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, as was a passenger in the SUV, Wauseka Brown Jr., 56, of Chiloquin. The F-350 driver and four passengers, including two juveniles, were not injured in the crash, OSP said.
The crash and investigation affected the highway for about an hour. OSP said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
OSP was assisted at the crash scene by Chiloquin Fire and ODOT.
