UPDATE: OSP identifies Bend driver, 79, killed in Highway 97 crash south of Redmond

(UPDATE: Details of crash)

REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Oregon State Police on Wednesday released the names and details of Tuesday evening's fatal crash in which a minivan driver from Bend crossed into the oncoming lane, sideswiped two cars and collided head-on with a semi-truck on Highway 97 south of Redmond.

The crash was reported at 5:34 p.m. near milepost 127, about five miles south of Redmond.

Troopers said their preliminary investigation found that William Longhway Sargent, 79, of Bend, was driving a southbound Chrysler Pacifica minivan when he "crossed into the northbound lanes for unknown reasons."

They said he sideswiped a northbound Land Rover Range Rover driven by John Bowman Browning III, 18, of Redmond, and a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Joseph Anthony Russo, 25, of Terrebonne.

Sargent's minivan then collided head-on with a northbound Freightliner commercial motor vehicle and trailer operated by Johnny Edward Jantzen Jr., 61, of Red Bluff, California.

Sargent died at the crash scene, troopers said, and the other three drivers were reportedly unhurt.

Highway 97 was closed for about four hours, bringing lengthy backups and an eventual detour around the crash scene.

OSP said was assisted at the scene by the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office and ODOT.

At first, ODOT advised motorists on its TripCheck map that only the northbound lanes were closed and to "prepare to slow or move over for worker safety."

But just after 6 p.m. came word of the full closure. "Expect extended delays or use an alternate route," ODOT said.

It was the second crash in 24 hours to block Highway 97 between Bend and Redmond, causing significant traffic backups during the evening commute.

Another occurred Monday evening and stopped or slowed traffic for several hours.
