Watch: Coast Guard helicopter crew rescues hiker from cliff at God’s Thumb on the Oregon coast

ASTORIA, Ore. (KTVZ) — A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Facility Newport rescued a hiker who was trapped on a cliff side at God’s Thumb in Lincoln City over the weekend.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River were contacted Saturday by North Lincoln Fire and Rescue, who requested assistance removing a hiker from a cliff after it was determined they would be unable to safely conduct the operation using their high-angle rescue team, officials said Monday.

The Coast Guard MH-65 helicopter crew safely hoisted the individual and transported them to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital, to be treated for minor injuries.

“This case was a great example of our strong partnership with Lincoln County Fire and Rescue,” said flight mechanic and Petty Officer Second Class Gavin Battle. “We’re happy the individual was reunited with his family.”
