Yemen: UN talks to open roads to blockaded city inconclusive

CAIRO (AP) — Yemen’s warring parties have not reached an agreement to lift a blockade by Houthi rebels of the country’s third largest city, the United Nations said, after three days of talks in the Jordanian capital. The announcement comes as a deadline looms for a nationwide ceasefire to be renewed on June 1, of which the issue of the blockaded city is a key part. Hans Grundberg, the U.N. envoy in Yemen, called the talks “an initial round of discussions,” and that there was a proposal for a phased reopening of roads in Taiz and elsewhere, which would allow aid deliveries and the movement of suffering Yemenis.
