Sentencing postponed for retired Arizona prisons boss who pleaded no-contest in armed standoff

PHOENIX (AP) — Former Arizona prisons chief Charles Ryan’s sentencing has been postponed for his no-contest plea to a disorderly conduct charge stemming from his 2022 standoff with police. Ryan was scheduled to be sentenced Thursday but his lawyer requested a separate hearing to present evidence favorable to his client. He is expected to be sentenced on Feb. 9 after a judge holds a mitigation hearing the same day. Authorities say he fired a gun inside his Tempe home and pointed a firearm at two officers. The plea agreement calls for Ryan to serve a sentence of probation and pay $8,500 to cover the cost of the police investigation.
