Avalanche kills a Russian skier while 5 others are rescued in ski resort in Indian-held Kashmir
SRINAGAR, India (AP) — An avalanche that hit a popular Himalayan ski resort in Indian-controlled Kashmir has killed a Russian skier while five others were rescued. Officials said earlier that at least four foreigners who were skiing and their local guide were hit by the avalanche on Thursday and buried in snow high in the mountains of the tourist town of Gulmarg. Rescuers pulled six survivors from the snow. Officials have not yet identified the killed skier. Gulmarg is in the western Himalayas and has one of Asia’s largest ski terrains. Avalanches are common in Kashmir.
