Kentucky lawmakers advance bill allowing child support to begin with pregnancy

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Lawmakers in Kentucky have advanced a bill to grant the right to collect child support for unborn children. It reflects a broader effort in Republican-led states to confer a fetus with the same rights as a person. The Kentucky bill would allow a parent to seek support up to a year after giving birth to cover pregnancy expenses. The bill won approval Tuesday from the Senate Families and Children Committee. It was the first vote on the proposal. The bill was amended in committee to put a time limit for seeking a court order extending child support to the time of pregnancy.
