AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — U.S. Rep. Colin Allred of Texas has won the Democratic nomination for Senate. The former NFL linebacker victory in the primary propels his underdog campaign to a November matchup against Republican Sen Ted Cruz. Allred fended off his biggest Democratic challenger, state Sen. Roland Gutierrez. Gutierrez became an outspoken voice for stricter gun laws after the Uvalde school shooting. Cruz easily won the GOP nomination in his bid for reelection. His last reelection came down to a narrow victory against Beto O’Rourke in 2018 during a strong year for Democrats nationally.
