BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A new program at Aspen Ridge Retirement Community in Bend is highlighting the power of intergenerational connection.

Sage and Sprout brings together senior citizens and young children (ages 4-8) to foster meaningful relationships through play, storytelling and shared activities.

"It’s just a real fun time!" said Gwen Morris, one of the senior participants. "Yesterday, I was catching ping-pong balls. It's active for us.”

Kellee Blanchard created the program to help young kids build a sense of community.

"So it's not a parent. It's not a grandparent, it's not a teacher. It's just a grown-up who is interested in them for who they are and willing to spend time with them," Blanchard said.

The parents say it's been a positive experience for the kids too.

"He talks about how they made him Valentine's Day cards and do crafts with him," said Margaret Farrell, who has a son in the program. "He talks about his 'grand-friends' even later in the week."

The program is the first of its kind in the community, creating a special space where generations connect, learn from one another and form lasting bonds.

One of the participants, Carol Douglass, says it's been a great way to relive her cherished memories as a teacher.

"I miss the classroom and my kids," Douglass said. "This comes along, and it’s great for me.”

There are about five kids in the program who meet with the seniors on Tuesday afternoons.

"They're really sweet kids," said Sage and Sprout participant Ginny Allen. "And they are just themselves. And they make my day! I look forward to it.'

There are many benefits to these connections, according to the Journal of Intergenerational Relationships. It helps kids build social skills and a sense of community, while reducing loneliness and improving mental health for seniors.

If your child is interested, you can register them for the program here.
