We appreciate your patience as we have navigated this complicated COVID-19 situation together for the last few weeks. This evening, Governor Brown ordered that all Oregon K-12 schools close beginning Monday, March 16 and concluding Tuesday, March 31.

At this time, students are expected to return to school on Wednesday, April 1.

We want to reiterate that there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 among Bend-La Pine Schools’ students or staff at this time.

What This Means for Students
Friday, March 13, will be a regular school day. This will allow students to collect learning materials that they might need and take home any personal items they might want while schools are closed. Our educators will also be able to talk with students and to help prepare them for this closure. Students are encouraged to take district issued iPads home with them for the closure period.

Monday, March 23 — Friday, March 27 is Bend-La Pine Schools Spring Break.

All students should plan to return to school on Wednesday, April 1.

All athletics and activities will be canceled during the closure period.

I cannot thank each and every one of you enough for your support during these quickly changing times. Please accept my sincere thanks for your patience and support as this situation has continued to evolve in Oregon and across the country. These measures are intended to help protect the most vulnerable populations we serve and to safeguard students and employees as much as possible.

Dear Crook County School District families,

Thank you for your patience as we work to navigate the COVID-19 situation. Last night, Governor Brown, in conjunction with the Oregon Health Authority, ordered that all Oregon K-12 schools close beginning Monday, March 16th and continue through Tuesday, March 31st. The Crook County School District is treating this as an extended spring break and is providing the following information during the closure:

·       Schools will be closed for students from Monday, March 16th until Wednesday, April 1st.

·       All school-related events are canceled during this time.

·       Staff will return Monday, March 30th.

·       Students will return to school Wednesday, April 1st.

·       All school buildings will be closed during this time.

·       At this time, Oregon schools are considering this an extended spring break, so students and teachers are not required to complete work. If desired, students and teachers can continue to engage in completing work (i.e. AP classes, online students). Imagine Math will be available for elementary students.

·       The District is waiting for guidance from the Oregon Deputy Superintendent, Colt Gill, to determine if missed school days need to be made up and the school year extended beyond the last day of June 11th.

·       A school meals program will be available to children from 12:00 am to 1:00 pm on 3/16 through 3/20 in front of Pioneer Complex (641, E. 1st Street). Please visit the district webpage for additional details (http://crookcounty.k12.or.us/) beginning 3/14.

·       The OSAA has canceled all sports practices and contests through March 31st.

·       Students who have recently been absent due to the concerns around COVID-19, will not be penalized as the District supports parents making health decisions for their children.

·       CCSD will ensure that graduation activities occur as scheduled and refinements will be made as we move closer to graduation day.

We recognize that you may have additional questions and concerns. The District Communications Office will be updating Facebook regularly and sending out emails to parents and families as we learn more. NeighborImpact Head Start classrooms temporarily close following Governor Kate Brown's announcement of school closures statewide
Redmond, OR - All Head Start classrooms and the Early Head Start program operated by NeighborImpact in Crook and Deschutes counties will close Monday. The closure is in coordination with Governor Kate Brown's announced closure of all public schools through March 31. Head Start classrooms will resume operation on April 6, provided no new developments force an extended closure.
Head Start serves 445 low-income children and their families in the two counties. The closure crosses a previously planned Spring Break week, which will lessen the impact. "We are facing some stark realities in program operations," noted Scott Cooper, Executive Director of NeighborImpact. "Closing our classrooms is a form of 'social distancing' that reduces the spread of disease. Many of our families are particularly susceptible to coronavirus, because people who lack housing or have to live in double-up situations or have less access to medical care or lack the discretionary income to buy the things that help keep people safe, you end up with more exposure. Keeping our classrooms open would only spread the virus faster."
Cooper also noted that like businesses and individuals, Head Start classrooms are struggling to find sanitary supplies needed during the epidemic. "Hand sanitizer and anti-bacterial wipes, as everyone knows, are being cleared off store shelves as fast as they are restocked. Our suppliers are cancelling back orders. Closing our doors for a few weeks gives us some room to catch up, and let the system adjust. "
Cooper acknowledged that closing classrooms puts a burden on some working families who may not have ready access to childcare. "There's no way around that, and I acknowledge it, and regret it," he said. "On the other hand, the reality of the current situation is that many of our children at the end of the day, after being potentially exposed in classrooms to a virus that is potentially lethal for elderly people, are picked up by their grandparents who serve as afternoon caregivers. We have to think about that, too."
"In the end, this is an operational and public safety decision. Tough times call for tough decisions, and the personal health and safety of children, their families and our employees has to be a priority. We look forward to this event calming down and getting back to the core business of getting children ready for school and supporting their families."
