‘Know Secrets’ this September with the Deschutes Public Library at a variety of events

— Psst! The cat’s out of the bag this September as the Deschutes Public Library reveals “Know Secrets.”

Plan the trip of a lifetime driving 1,800 miles along the Alaska-Canada Highway. Try real-world treasure hunting with geocaching and learn to set healthy, sustainable boundaries with confidence. Hear secrets revealed of the Communist era’s Red Spy Queen and get answers to questions about end-of-life care.

Teens can learn to make Ukrainian crêpes and attend a two-day whitewater kayaking series. Kids can discover the secrets of Tumalo Creek and uncover the hidden world of math through fun and games.

All programs are free and open to the public. Programs marked with an asterisk (*) require registration.

Nos Volvemos Poema en Español 

Este taller celebra las voces bilingües y la expresión poética. Se invita a los participantes a escribir poesía en español e inglés, a través del juego, de formas poéticas sencillas y de la exploración del sonido, el ritmo y la voz. 

Escuchar Música de Forma Activa en Español 

Armando Alcalde va a tocar la guitarra y explicar los detalles de lo que sucede en música. Este taller será una combinación de un concierto y una plática sobre técnicas de escucha activa. 

Your Favorite Childhood Candy...Better!* 

Make peanut butter from scratch and then create your own copycat Reese’s Cups and Butterfingers. Intended for ages 10 and up. Registration required. This program is full.  

Family Friendly Yoga in English y Español

Whitewater Kayak Series: Skills, Safety and Community* 

Explore whitewater kayaking through a supportive and inclusive environment. This weekend workshop takes place in an enclosed pool where participants can comfortably release from their kayak, learn basic strokes, and above all, have fun. Intended for teens and young adults ages 15+. Registration required. This program is full. 

Aging In Your Own Home: Stay Independent Longer 

There are many stages to aging, and for many people, remaining in their own home is their priority. Gain useful tools and resources that are available to help you or a loved one stay independent longer. 

Upstream Family Explorers* 

Find out what makes a healthy creek and discover the tiny aquatic creatures that live inside this fascinating habitat. Intended for children ages 4–7; all children must be accompanied by a caregiver. Registration required. 

The Secrets to Crêpes* 

Learn to make nalysnyky, a delicate paper-thin crêpe filled with a soft, creamy, homemade cheese filling. Intended for teens ages 13-18. Registration required. 

Paper Secrets: All-Occasion Card Workshop* 

Attend a hands-on card-making session where participants can create two unique all-occasion cards. No prior experience is needed—just bring your creativity! Registration required. 

Driving the Alaska-Canada Highway 

Plan the trip of a lifetime driving 1,800 miles from the Lower 48 to Fairbanks, Alaska. Presenters Jane and Jim Kress share tips and tricks they’ve learned from traveling to Alaska since the 1970s.

Sunriver Nature Center and Observatory: Secrets in the Soil 

Enjoy a mushroom dissection, microscope viewing, and learn about energy flow with a simple food web activity through hands-on activities. Intended for children ages 6-12; children under 10 must be accompanied by a caregiver. 

Lecture on Argentine Music in English y Español 

Dive into the music and learn from Argentine artist Cecilia Zabala. Sumérgete en la música y aprende de la artista argentina Cecilia Zabala. 

Clever Girl: Red Spy Queen  

Secrets hidden. Secrets revealed. Hear from author Lauren Kessler, who worked to uncover and understand this complex story, chronicling the fraught life of Elizabeth Bentley. 

The Secret Self Speaks: A Writing and Bookmaking Playshop* 

Shine new light on memories, dreams, desires, or truths you’ve never told. Create handmade booklets with compartments to stash your secrets. Registration required.  

Hospice 101 

Learn what hospice is, what it isn’t, and how and when to access it. Join us as we break down myths and clarify this complex topic of end-of-life care. 

The Secret to Better Boundaries* 

Without firm boundaries, we allow our lives to become dictated to by the whims, wants, and needs of others, at the expense of our own. Learn to set and maintain healthy boundaries with confidence. Registration required. 

Children's Museum of Central Oregon Pop-Up Exhibits 

Join the Children's Museum of Central Oregon and check out some favorite exhibits during this open playtime. Intended for children ages 0-11; all children must be accompanied by a caregiver. 

Kids' Math Night with Mathnasium 

Discover the secrets of math with fun and games to get your kid excited about STEM. Intended for elementary-and middle-school-aged children; all children must be accompanied by a caregiver. 

Introduction to Geocaching 

Learn how to play this real-world, outdoor treasure-hunting game that’s free and fun for the whole family. After the presentation, join a one-mile walk to find a geocache.
