Deschutes County reminder: Political signs are prohibited in county road rights of way; state highways, too

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- As the Nov. 5 General Election approaches, the Deschutes County Road Department is reminding political campaigns and their supporters that political signs placed within a county road right of way will be removed.

“Deschutes County Code prohibits the posting of political signs in the county road right of way for the safety of all road users," said Chris Doty, Deschutes County Road Department director. “Improperly placed signs can distract drivers, restrict sight lines and block the view of traffic control devices.”

It is the responsibility of political campaigns and their supporters to ensure that signs are not placed in public road rights of way. Property owners and political campaigns can determine the approximate location of public road right of way boundaries by using the interactive map on the Deschutes County Dial website.

Campaign signs can be posted on private properties with landowner permission.

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) also prohibits the placement of political signs adjacent to a state highway. You can find more information about the state sign regulations here.
