C.O businesses doing whatever they can to help evacuees
(Update: Adding video) From sleeping bags to hand-wrapped sandwiches ; St. Vincent de Paul has no room for more donations
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Donations have been pouring in across the region to help those who have had to evacuate their homes due to Oregon's destructive wildfires.
There have been so many donations, St. Vincent De Paul in Bend and Redmond said Thursday they have had to turn away those looking to donate more items.
But some other businesses in Central Oregon are still looking to help those in need.
Sunday Guitars in Bend is taking in all kinds of donated items, from sleeping bags to lamps. Originally, the idea was to have a garage sale, but the store's owner decided to donate the items instead.
"Whatever it takes to help bring a little order to the chaos that they are going to find once they get back to their properties," said Ted Engstrom, the music store's owner.
The items will be distributed to people displaced by the Holiday Farm Fire.
In Terrebonne, Evan Schwender and his staff at the Terrebonne Depot are putting together nearly 500 meals for evacuees staying at the Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center.
"I really want to help this community, and this is how we know how to do it,” Schwender said.
Schwender’s restaurant is also accepting clothing donations in exchange for an Elotes, a grilled Mexican street corn.
"I would love to be able to feed these people, of course, but also provide some hope that there's still some out there, that we are looking out for each other,” Schwender said. “We can be neighborly, and any time you come to Central Oregon, you will be received with open arms from our community."
