(Update: Adding video, map, sheriff's office statement)
La PINE, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Firefighters working from the ground and air were able to stop the spread of a new fire that broke out Friday afternoon southwest of La Pine and burned within a half-mile of some homes.
The Jackpine Fire was reported around 12:45 p.m. on BLM land west of Jackpine Loop and north of Masten Road, officials said. It was about a half-mile from the nearest homes, they added.
The fire had burned about three acres by 2:30 p.m., but officials told KTVZ news that forward progress of the blaze had been stopped.
The La Pine Rural Fire Protection District and interagency fire crews were working on the blaze with five engines and a hand crew. Also on site or en route were two large air tankers and a Type 1 helicopter.
"Crews are actively constructing a line around the fire, and one helicopter remains working," officials said in an X post shortly before 3 p.m.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
The fire district urged people to avoid the area for safety considerations.
