Rep. Janelle Bynum first Oregon freshman named to powerful House Financial Services Committee in 28 years

WASHINGTON (KTVZ) -- Rep. Janelle Bynum (OR-05) was selected Wednesday to serve on the powerful House Financial Services Committee.

Bynum was one of only three first-term Democrats to be named to the committee, her office said. This marks the first time that an Oregon freshman has been named to the committee in 28 years.

The Financial Services Committee has jurisdiction on issues related to the economy, housing, insurance, and the banking system through its oversight of the Federal Reserve, the Treasury, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, among others.

"Rep. Bynum’s role will allow her to fight to strengthen the economy, protect consumers, lower the cost of housing, and more," her announcement stated.

“It is an honor to serve on such an influential committee,” said Rep. Bynum. “I know that families in Oregon are struggling. As a member of this committee, I am eager to lower costs for things like groceries, housing, and electricity, and help get our economy back on track for all of us. It is past time that Washington puts our interests first.”

“I am pleased to welcome Congresswoman Bynum to the House Financial Services Committee,” said Financial Services Committee Ranking Member Maxine Waters. “Congresswoman Bynum has a strong track record of fighting to address the affordable housing crisis and lower rising costs for consumers and working-class families in Oregon. I have no doubt she will draw on her background and expertise to continue this important effort and I look forward to working alongside her.”

According to Koray Rosati, Bynum's communications director, "The most recent U.S. House of Representatives Member from Oregon elected to the House Financial Services Committee as a freshman was Darlene Hooley (D) in the 105th Congress (1997 – 1999), when the Committee was then called “Banking & Financial Services.”
