51 new laws will take effect beginning Friday, new gun legislation included

(Update: Added Video)

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ News) -- Several new laws will be enacted over the next several months. 51 will begin on Friday. Here's what you should know about Senate Bill 243.

The new law bans all bump stocks and rapid fire activators. Which includes burst, forced reset, and hellfire triggers.

The unlawful possession of a rapid fire activator is now a class A misdemeanor, and the unlawful transportation of one of them is now a class B felony.

Additionally, it also includes a public area restriction turning the penalty of carrying a gun in a restricted area into a class C felony. However, that public area restriction is subject to local governments discretion.

This all began last year when the Supreme Court overturned legislation banning bump stocks on the federal level.

If you remember earlier this year, the debate over this bill was incredibly contentious. Several legislatures threatened to stage a walk out to prevent the bill from passing.

At the time, our partners at KGW said Republicans were okay with the ban on bump stocks, but the public area restrictions were way too far.

The bill passed both the House and Senate along party lines.

KTVZ News reached out to several gun groups, but have not heard back.
