Bend Bikes celebrates its 10-year anniversary, looks ahead to more progress
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The goal of Bend Bikes is safety for cyclists through a comprehensive series of routes covering the city.
The cause was celebrated at a party Tuesday evening at The Environmental Center, with food, drinks and a look back.
The nonprofit was created in 2013 by Lucas Freeman, Brian Potwin, Pam Hardy and Nick Stevenson.
Bend Bikes considers itself a grassroots organization, with a mission centered around inclusive, sustainable transportation planning.
It takes into account low-income residents and communities of color, especially when advocating for bike infrastructure.
Vice President of the Bend Bikes Board, Kaitlin Greene, said: “We continue to make a lot of inroads with important decision-makers in town, including, you know, folks on City Council, folks working for the city of Bend who are really moving the dial on how our transportation system develops.”
Bend City Councilor Ariel Mendez said: “I like to bike, and I like to make sure that there's a parking space available for those who need it, and I like to show that it's totally possible, if you have the right gear and the safe route.”
