From agates to thunder eggs: Madras rock show brings hidden treasures to light

MADRAS, Ore. (KTVZ) — Rock enthusiasts have a chance to explore everything from raw stones to polished jewelry this weekend at the Madras Rock, Gem and Mineral Show.

The free event at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds features a wide range of items, including uncut rocks, agates, petrified wood and intricately crafted jewelry. Vendors from across the country and beyond are taking part.

Event coordinator Amber Searcy says Central Oregon is a prime destination for rockhounds.

“Central Oregon is the rockhound mecca,” Searcy said. “We have tons of places here, especially out on the coast. There’s all kinds of rocks — limb casts, petrified wood, agates, thunder eggs. We have vendors here from all over the United States, from the East Coast to Canada. We’ve got people from everywhere here.”

For those looking to collect their own finds, the event also offers guided field trips. Organizers say participants must sign up before 8 a.m., with groups departing at 8:30 a.m.

The Madras Rock, Gem and Mineral Show runs through Sunday, ending at 2 p.m.
