Canby High School student, 18, struck and killed while crossing train tracks

CANBY, Ore. (KGW/KTVZ) — The Canby High School community is mourning the loss of a student who was struck and killed by a train Monday evening, KGW reported.

Canby police confirmed that 18-year-old Mason Warshaw was crossing a set of train tracks just north of the Pine Street intersection when he was struck by a northbound freight train. Police believe that the collision was accidental.

A call about the crash came in shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Monday evening, the Canby Police Department said. Warshaw was found dead at the scene.

The Pine Street crossing, which is close to the Clackamas County Fairgrounds, isn't within Canby's downtown quiet zone. Police said they were told that the train did blow its horn as it approached the intersection.

In a letter to families on Tuesday, Canby School District Superintendent Dr. Aaron Downs broke the news about Warshaw's death, offering condolences to the high school senior's family.

"We also offer condolences to our Canby High School students and staff members, especially Mason's classmates, teachers and support staff," Downs wrote. "Our district counselors and psychologists are available to students throughout the day today."

Downs said that families with concerns about their students' reactions to the loss should contact their teachers, school counselors or administrative staff.
