REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- On Thursday, August 8, Redmond Police patrol and traffic officers conducted 101 traffic stops on Highway 97, near the SW Evergreen Avenue intersection, and citations were issued for 32 violations, officials said Friday.

The remainder of the enforcement efforts resulted in warnings and traffic safety reminders to motorists, Lt. Eric Beckwith said.

Beckwith said more than two-thirds (68%) of the tickets were for speeding, and the rest were a "pretty good mix" of other violations.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), one-third of traffic fatalities are a result of speeding.

Redmond Police Chief Devin Lewis said, “Traffic safety will continue to be a priority for the Redmond Police Department, and motorists traveling in and around the City of Redmond should be mindful of the enforcement efforts of officers.”

The department emphasizes enforcement of traffics laws in multiple ways:

-Specific operations, such as the Highway 97 effort.

-Focused efforts in problematic areas and in school zones.

-Utilizing grants funding sources that help pay for targeted efforts to reduce impaired driving, distracted driving (use of cellphones, etc.), and those not adhering to seat belt laws.
