Redmond’s Jericho Road providing small propane tanks to people in homeless camps for heating, to curb open fires

REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Jericho Road of Redmond said Tuesday it is currently offering replacement or refills of 1-pound propane tanks for people living in homeless camps.
"It is an effort to reduce the use of disposable green cans, provide emergency tanks for short-term heating needs, and reduce or eliminate open campfires through the fire season," the organization said.
The cans will be replaced or refilled on a weekly basis.
The coordinators of the program, Bob Bohac and Craig Bramley, say the new program is meeting with considerable success.
Propane is the only form of fuel that is available to those in need and living off the grid. However, they said, the cost has increased to the level that many people are foregoing other items such as food and medicine in order to stay warm and cook their meals.
