Sisters traffic stop leads to Bend man’s arrest on drug charges
SISTERS, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A Bend man under investigation for alleged drug sales was stopped on U.S. Highway 20 in Sisters on Wednesday and arrested after a Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office K-9 team helped deputies find heroin and methamphetamine, along with cash and brass knuckles.
The Sheriff’s Office Street Crimes Unit was investigating Derek Chamberlain for drug sales, Detective Sgt. Doug Sullivan said. On Wednesday, detectives learned Chamberlain was returning to the county with possible drugs in his possession, Sullivan said.
Deputies spotted Chamberlain driving a Toyota 4Runner heading east through Sisters and stopped him around 5 p.m. near milepost 1 on Highway 20 west, the sergeant said.
Sheriff’s K-9 Ares and his partner, Deputy Mike Magnin, responded and alerted to the presence of controlled substances in Chamberlain’s SUV, Sullivan said. A subsequent search turned up about four ounces of suspected heroin, a user amount of meth, Xanax, brass knuckles and over $3,000 in cash.
Chamberlain was booked into the county jail in Bend on charges of heroin possession and delivery, meth possession, possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance and felon in possession of a restricted weapon. His bail totaled $57,000.
