Mayor of Sisters and Council President face potential recall

(update: adding video)

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) --  A petition has been filed to recall Sisters Mayor Jennifer Letz and City Council President Sarah McDougall.

The petition filed by Frank Claxton alleges both Mayor Letz and President Mcdougall have quote disregarded obligations of being a public official, thereby eroding public trust and confidence.

KTVZ News spoke with Mayor Letz following the filing.

"Honestly, it hasn't been made very clear to my knowledge," Letz told KTVZ News. "and "it's not really changing anything that I'm doing. I'm still going to work hard to serve the community and serve the City of Sisters like I have for the last four and a half, almost five years of my time on Council.

This comes after months of contentious debate over the future of art on top of the roundabout on Highway 20 and Locust street.

Back in August, the City Council discussed several different statue ideas, but several residents rallied behind a life-size bronze of lane frost riding red rock. The City Council ultimately tabled the discussion.

KTVZ News spoke with several residents who were frustrated by that decision.

Gary Tewalt, a Sisters resident said, “The safety issue that you're talking about is nonsense to me, and you mentioned, you know, you got a thousand critters on the fence down here and cougars and lions and people, you don't see people crashing. And fact is, the traffic going so slow. If everybody bumped into each other, you wouldn't have any issue.”

“The history is so important in this town has zero history that we support, and Red Rock could be the first piece of it,” said Curt Kallberg another resident of Sisters.

KTVZ has tried reaching out to Frank Claxton but have not heard back yet.
