Possible sonic boom heard throughout Central Oregon, residents raise questions
UPDATE: NewsChannel 21 reached out to the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) concerning the possible Christmas Day sonic boom and according to a spokesperson, "The FAA regulates civilian aircraft. Military aircraft can create sonic booms. Please check with military installations in the local area."
According to the Department of Defense, the closest Air Force Base to Central Oregon is Kingsley Field, home of the 173rd Fighter Wing. Pilots at the base fly the F-15, which can break the sound barrier, creating a sonic boom.
NewsChannel 21 has reached out to the base to see if any of their pilots were conducting training exercises over Central Oregon on Christmas Day.
Redmond, ORE. (KTVZ) -- According to Central Oregonians, a big boom could be heard across the High Desert, specifically in areas like Redmond and Crook River Ranch.
Residents have been scratching their heads, wondering what this boom could possibly be.
Kevin Murphy of Crooked River Ranch, was concerned over what he heard and phone our newsroom:
“We felt a shaking of our house today at 11:45 on Crooked river Ranch. Can't find any information on it as to whether it was a sonic boom or an earthquake. If you could post something or let us know, we would appreciate it."
As of this report, over 400 comments were posted on our Facebook page about this boom.
Some say they heard the boom twice. Others say, shaking could be felt.
The United States Geological Survey isn't reporting any earthquakes in the area.
Newschannel 21 reached out to Redmond Fire and Rescue dispatch.
The agency said, they were unable to locate where the boom originated from and says, they believe it was fireworks – a big one – nonetheless, fireworks.
Fireworks are legal in Redmond, but only if they are approved by the Oregon State Fire Marshal's office.
Using illegal fireworks in Redmond, can result in a fine of up to $500.
