West Coast Health Alliance pushes back on federal vaccine recommendations
The West Coast Health Alliance (WCHA) is raising concerns following a recent meeting of the Federal Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). The Oregon Health Authority released their statement.
At its September 18–19 meeting, ACIP issued new recommendations on the measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (MMRV) vaccine, also known as the combined MMR + chickenpox shot.
WCHA and other health advocates argue the committee did not follow standard scientific methods when reviewing the information presented. They note that no new safety or effectiveness data were provided to support the recommendations.
The concern is that the recommendations could limit parents’ ability to choose between one combined shot or separate vaccines, especially for children under four. Critics also warn the changes could affect families who rely on the federal Vaccines for Children program.
The West Coast Health Alliance is aligning with the American Academy of Pediatrics, which has long supported giving parents that choice. The group is calling for a more transparent, evidence-based review process going forward.
