Caldera swimmer Campbell McKean leads the way for state success and the program’s future
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The level of star talent in Central Oregon’s swimming scene is absolutely incredible. Among them is Caldera’s Campbell McKean, who continues to make waves as one of the best senior swimmers in the country.
"I've been super-proud of what's going on so far in this season, and it's been really fun," McKean said.
A trip to the Olympic Trials last summer, along with two state records during last year’s high school season, have helped McKean gain national recognition.
"With the Olympic Trials and the meets after that, it's been super-fun experiencing a different level," McKean said. "with all the pros and even competing internationally for Team USA, it's been really fun to see, like how other countries operate, and especially how Team USA operates."
McKean’s success has helped shine a spotlight on Caldera Swim and the Bend Swim Club, all while inspiring the next generation of swimmers.
A young Bend Swim Club swimmer said, "I want to be something like an Olympic swimmer, kind of like Campbell when I get to high school — super-fast- just a really positive person."
In her second year as head coach, Jayme Vanerden believes McKean’s presence on the team has raised the bar for everyone.
"He kind of brings an elevated goal and expectation of what you can accomplish in our team," Vanerden said. "And so we've been really lucky to have him be part of our squad. The kids really are just so excited to support him and see where his career goes."
Now Vanerden and Caldera have all eyes on this year’s state meet next week.
Vanerden said, "They see what's possible, even in our small-town events—that you can have Olympic-quality swimmers coming out of our pool."
Caldera placed at state for the first time last season and hopes to do the same this year. But with the loss of 11 senior swimmers, Vanerden and McKean hope their success will help build the program toward a bright future.
"And then from there, we'll qualify, hopefully, with Campbell's two events and at least two relays." Vanerden said. "And I'm hoping for a couple more individual swims. Most of our swimmers have been really working hard this season."
"You can come and try out. We will teach you how to swim," Vanerden added. "A lot of our swimmers graduating this year learned to swim three years ago, and they've been going to state. So we can take you there."
McKean hopes the momentum continues for years to come.
"It's been super-fun," McKean said. "Definitely just starting something new with the brand-new high school. I think starting off right would definitely bring the future in good hands."
The IMC District Meet begins Friday, and the State Meet kicks off next weekend at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center.
