Mountain View lacrosse pays tribute to Ryan O’Connell in third annual memorial game
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The Mountain View High School lacrosse community came together once again Thursday to honor the memory of former player Ryan O’Connell in their third annual memorial game.
“As an assistant coach, it means a lot to see everybody out here — not just representing the game, but representing Ryan himself,” former teammate and friend Mason Ludwig shared.
In 2022, Ryan O’Connell tragically drowned in a pool at Tetherow. Since then, his legacy has continued to live on through his teammates, friends and the entire Mountain View lacrosse community. The annual memorial game serves as a tribute to his lasting impact.
“Growing up with him meant a lot. Being able to play this game for him is honestly a dream come true,” Ludwig said. “Starting this endowment and everything we’re working towards is going to improve the game and honor his name for years to come.”
Ryan’s memory is not only kept alive through the annual game but also through the Ryan O’Connell Fund, which is dedicated to empowering the next generation of athletes.
Ryan's brother, Charlie O'Connell, said, “I’m just thankful for all the parents that have made it out here and all the people that donated to the fundraiser for new gear and for all the new players.”
Charlie O’Connell, Ryan’s younger brother and a junior at Mountain View, has felt his brother’s influence in all aspects of life.
“Especially in basketball, it helps me work harder. I think about it every day,” Charlie shared. “His presence is bigger than just lacrosse — he’s left an impact on everyone here.”
Ryan’s story continues to inspire not just his family, but also younger athletes in the community. One player reflected on Ryan’s influence, saying, “He was just such an awesome, gregarious guy. He kind of inspired me as a kid — I wanted to be a little bit like him. It’s an honor to play in his game.”
Ryan O’Connell’s legacy is one that will endure in the hearts of his family, friends, and the Mountain View lacrosse community for years to come.
“This is just such a great thing," Charlie said, "They have a poster of him in the hallway at Mountain View. I walk by it every day and just think about him. He made everyone around him happier, and I’m glad we all have a chance to get out here and honor him.”
Be kind. Be Ryan.
