Summit track hunts more championships this season, and hosts Heptathlon and Decathlon this weekend
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Summit Track and Field is back, and Head Coach Dave Turnbull has his sights set on another title. With 21 state championships already under their belt, the Storm are ready to chase even more success this season.
"You know, it's always one of those things you don't want to be boastful, but our goal is always a district and state championship," Turnbull said.
For Turnbull, winning is about hard work and preparation.
"It's my view that if somebody's got to win, why can't it be us?" he said. "Well, the only reason it wouldn't be us is if we don't work hard enough or we get beat by a better team. And if that happens, I will take my hat off and congratulate whoever beats us. And they're going to have to beat us with better talent, because they won't outwork us."
As he nears the final years of his coaching career, Turnbull remains determined to add more trophies to Summit’s collection.
"We hope to get a few more. You know, I've got five. I'm going to go four more years, and my retirement date is already projected. I'm going to graduate with this freshman class."
Summit will put their championship mindset to the test this weekend as they host over 80 athletes from more than 20 teams for the Mondo Track Club Heptathlon and Decathlon.
Turnbull credits Summit’s top-tier facilities for allowing them to hold such high-profile events.
"And so they approved it. And here we are. We've raised over probably $3 million in the community. Having the US Regional Junior Olympics Championships. I think the investment has paid for itself."
Despite unpredictable weather conditions, the Storm remain undeterred.
"So we're out here in the snow. We're out here in the rain. They're working their tails off," Turnbull said. "And I think if I ask no excuses from them, I have to ask no excuses from our coaching staff. So before the Sun Invite, if there's snow, every coach will be out here getting it cleared and getting it ready for the athletes. Because if we don't have the same philosophy of no excuses, and we take a look at snow as an excuse not to participate or practice, then we've just given them permission to not be here."
The Mondo Track event kicks off this Friday at 2 PM and concludes on Saturday. Summit Track and Field is ready to take on the season—no excuses, just results.
