Runaway Dogs: The forgotten cost of New Year’s celebrations

BEND, Ore. -- (KTVZ) --    While New Year’s eve brought a lot of joy and excitement for most, it was not a fun night for some of the pets of Central Oregon. The shelters at the Humane Society of Central Oregon are full of runaways and strays. Fireworks and gun shots often scare pets into bolting out of their homes.

The silver lining is most of the people who have filed missing dog reports with the shelter have already been connected with their dogs. If you find or lose a pet, don’t wait to report it missing. The sooner a report is filed, the better.

Lynne Ouchida, Director of Community Partnerships for HSCO said “if you lose or find an animal, make sure you report it to the Humane Society of Central Oregon or your local shelter to see if that animal, has either been found by somebody else or that you let us know that you've lost a pet. And then maybe we've got a report that somebody has found your pet. We love connecting people with their pets outside of the shelter, and that also is a really quick and easy way to get your pet back.”

The best thing you can do to make sure your pet never stays lost, is their microchip. If you adopt a pet,  make sure that microchip has your information on it, and not a previous owner. Also check if the phone number is up-to-date.
