PORTLAND, Ore. — The last round of snow from this week's winter storm wrapped up Friday morning, and now the results are in: As measured on KGW's rooftop, downtown Portland received a total of 3.5 inches of snow on Thursday and Friday. The city overall got 2.0 inches, as reported by the National Weather Service.
For downtown, it was a pretty even split across the two days, with the first big round of snow Thursday morning and early afternoon dumping about 1.7 inches and the second round bringing another 1.8 inches starting late Thursday night and continuing through mid-morning Friday.
The second round in particular brought more powder than expected; after a Thursday afternoon lull, the forecast had called for a night of freezing rain followed by a brief round of morning snow, but the transition back to snow ended up happening pretty early in the night. Portland International Airport reported almost entirely snow, with just traces of ice in the mix.
More freezing rain had been predicted for areas south of Portland, with the National Weather Service issuing an Ice Storm Warning for Salem Thursday night. But with temperatures hovering at or just above freezing, the city ended up getting a mix of precipitation that built up only 0.1 inches of ice on the ground at most.
