PORTLAND, Ore. (KGW/KTVZ) — Thousands of people remained without power Tuesday morning in western Oregon, including the Portland metro area, after heavy wind and rain storm whipped across the region Monday evening.

However, power companies have made progress restoring electricity.

As of 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, about 13,783 Portland General Electric (PGE) customers and around 3,805 Pacific Power customers are without power, with the majority of people between Portland, Eugene and the Oregon Coast. Those numbers are down from 54,407 PGE and 28, 316 Pacific Power customers who were without electricity at 11:30 p.m. on Monday. At one point, there were more than 65,000 PGE customers impacted.

Peak wind gusts reached 70-75 mph along the Oregon Coast and 45-54 in the Willamette Valley, KGW meteorologist Rod Hill reported.

Along with heavy winds, the Portland metro has seen more than two inches of continued rainfall since the weekend, creating the conditions for downed trees.

Downed trees and power lines

Multiple downed trees have been reported around the region since Monday evening, with trees falling onto cars, homes and power lines.

In one instance, a tree fell just before 8 p.m. on Monday outside Hillsboro Shute Park Library. There appears to be some damage to the roof and to glass, according to a spokesperson for the library system. No one was injured. The library usually opens to the public at 10 a.m., but that has been pushed back to 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

A tree also fell on top of a car in the area of North Maryland Avenue and North Simpson Street in Portland.

A tree and a power line were knocked down on North Oswego Avenue in Portland.

Meanwhile, Northwest Thompson Road in Portland is closed between Northwest Cornell Road and Northwest 53rd Drive due to downed trees and power lines blocking the street. People are asked to avoid the area as Multnomah County Road Maintenance works with PGE crews to clear the road. Residents can use Northeast Skyline Boulevard or Northwest 53rd Drive to detour around the closure.

PGE said crews are out assessing damage and making repairs to repair power as soon as possible. If people notice a downed powerline, stay away, do not touch it and report it to PGE 503-464-7777 or 800-544-1795. Then call 911.

Safety Tips from PGE:

  • Stay at least 50 feet away from any downed power line and assume it’s live. Call 911 and PGE immediately.
  • Have an outage plan, whether it’s staying home with supplies or heading to a friend’s house.
  • Keep an emergency kit with food, water, blankets, flashlights, and any necessary medications.
  • Make sure your contact information is up to date with your power provider for outage updates.
