Burns-area residents warned to avoid contact with contaminated floodwaters

BURNS, Ore. (KTVZ) -- While officials say drinking water in the flood-stricken Burns area remains safe to use, they are also warning residents to exercise caution and minimize contact with floodwaters that have now tested positive for E. coli and coliform bacteria.
“This is why it is important to take extra precautions to stay out of floodwaters, not allow your children to play in it and keep your pets out of it,” the Harney County Sheriff’s Office advised in an update Tuesday evening.
“Make sure you are using PPE (personal protective equipment),” they said, which includes rubber boots, gloves, waders if in deeper water and goggles to minimize exposure.
Residents and others in the area also were advised to keep clothing worn in floodwaters separate from other clothing and items, and to not wear their shoes or boots from the floodwaters into their home.
The water will continue to be tested until the floodwaters recede, they said.
An extensive list of resources, from maps and sandbags to portable toilets, showers and shelter options, has been posted on the sheriff’s office Facebook page. Donations are being accepted at the Burns Christian Church.
