Mostly rain and a wintry mix this week but a white Christmas is possible for some

You’ll be waking up to rain this morning, with a chance for some flakes to fall within that if you’re south of Bend. Rain will continue to fall for the first half of the day, then become spotty in the afternoon, and clear into the night. Rain totals for the day will be around a quarter inch for most but La Pine, Sunriver, and Sisters could accumulate around a half of an inch. This could cause some localized urban flooding.

Highs are in the 40s today.

It will be dry as you’re waking up Christmas morning, but snow and rain returns in the late afternoon, or early evening, on Christmas. Snow will fall in the higher elevations, generally above 4000ft. I am not expecting a ton of accumulation, but around an inch by the end of the night Wednesday is possible, which would give folks in Sunriver and La Pine the feeling of a white Christmas just before bed.

Heavy, wet snow is expected along the mountains with upwards of around 2 feet by the end of the week, starting on Christmas. Because of this, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Wednesday into Friday morning. This will likely be upgraded to a warning as we approach the day.

If you are traveling for the holiday, I know you’ll be rushing out of your in-law’s house to get home, but please remember your winter emergency car kit before you go. Travel will be impacted from the heavy snow and gusty winds. Take it slow and drive carefully.

 Happy holidays and safe travels!
