Winter weather starts overnight tonight

It should be another nice day today as our atmosphere gets set up for the winter weather pattern. Highs today will be in the 40s and 50s. We’ll have a mostly sunny start, but clouds will increase throughout the afternoon, becoming overcast by dinner time. Lows tonight are only dropping into the 20s and 30s.

A Winter Storm Watch was released by the National Weather Service for Thursday evening and will expire Saturday afternoon. It’s out for the Cascades and the eastern slopes, as well as areas south of Bend. This will likely be updated to a warning as the system approaches.

Rain and snow will begin falling overnight tonight. At first, it will be more wet rather than wintry. Rain and snow will fall off and on all day Friday. You can expect snow showers Friday night, as temperatures will be a bit colder. I’m forecasting around 8-12” of snow for the Cascades by Saturday and a few inches in areas like Sunriver and La Pine.

By the end of the weekend, I’m looking at 1-2’ for the Cascades and upwards of 5-6” is possible in our higher elevations. Snow totals will be compromised locally due to the recent mild pattern, but my friends south of Bend have a good chance of seeing decent, measurable snow.

Travel this weekend will be icy and slick in town, and difficult through the passes. Remember your winter emergency car kit.

Happy Thursday! Have a great day.
