A chance for isolated thunderstorms this afternoon sparks Local Alert Weather Day

Temperatures will top out at about 20 degrees above normal today, with highs hitting the upper 80s and low 90s. This heat will contribute to instability in the atmosphere, providing us with thunderstorms chances later today. Due to the chance of storms, we have issued a Local Alert Weather Day today.

Storms could start popping up at around 3pm, in the height of the afternoon, and will be traveling south to north. Chances will die off within an hour or so after sunset.

Many of these storms will be dry, which means little rain is expected to make it to the ground. Keep an extra watchful eye out if you get caught underneath a storm this afternoon for any potential fire starts. We have closed the door on ski season and it is now time to start looking ahead to the fire season. We aren’t critically dry at the surface but we’re approaching the summer months, so it’s always safe to be a little extra aware.

A ridge of high pressure is dominating the west this week, which is keeping us warm. It will flatten Thursday, which will have our temps back in the 70s, but will build again quickly as we walk into the weekend. Saturday will be the warmest of the day of the week, with record breaking heat for some.

Things change next week. In fact, we do a complete 180 as temperatures drop back into the 60s and we see a few scattered showers. Summer is close, but Mother Nature isn’t quite ready to let go of Spring just yet.

Have a good Wednesday! If thunder roars, go indoors.
