HEAT WAVE: Central Oregonians will experience an extended period of high heat

Bend, OR (KTVZ) -

The heat wave will begin for many today, others will hop on board tomorrow. Highs will be in the upper 80s and low 90s this afternoon under blue skies. Overnight, lows will drop into the 40s and 50s.

Temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid 90s through the weekend. Little relief is expected in some of the overnight hours.

A ridge of high pressure is building into the west coast and will park itself here for the long term. There will be little escaping the heat unless you make it out to the coast–even the mountains will be in the 80s and 90s.

Heat alerts are out across Oregon in advance. Many of the alerts will become active tomorrow and will progressively expire throughout the weekend or early next week. No heat alerts have been released for Central Oregon, but I think our National Weather Service station might hop on board at some point today.

We’re in the slow cooker for this heat wave, meaning we’ll be cooking under this heat for a while. I have temperatures in the 90s through the majority of next week. Make sure you’re finding ways to stay cool and safe.

In addition to the heat, remember to practice fire safety. Fire conditions will be critical at times. The Lower Columbia Basin is under a Fire Weather Watch on Friday but we will likely see this upgraded to a warning. This includes portions of Jefferson County. We have a couple hot, dry, and breezy days ahead that will most likely bring about fire weather alerts as well.

Happy Thursday! Have a great day and stay safe.
